Buffalo News: Ellicott Development plans trio of projects in downtown Buffalo

Carl and William Paladino’s Ellicott Development Co. is proposing a trio of reuse projects in and around downtown Buffalo, planning a mixture of commercial and residential space in each as it works to bring the vacant buildings back to life.

The three historic renovation projects, each of which will come before the city Planning Board for consideration, would create a total of 18 new apartments and several floors of new office space on both the east and west edges of the city’s central business district. Ellicott is working with the State Historic Preservation Office on all three projects, which would qualify them for lucrative state and federal historic tax credits to finance the combined $18.8 million price tag.

Construction on Ellicott Development Co.’s latest Buffalo project has reached a key milestone.

The four-story, 44,000-square-foot building, being built by Concept Construction Corp., has reached its halfway mark and is on pace to open later this year.

Designed by Kideney Architects, the $8 million, privately-financed project, located at 905 Elmwood Avenue, replaces a dilapidated gas station that operated at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and W. Delavan Street.

Work began last year.

The corner of Elmwood and W. Delavan Avenue is growing up where the former Elmwood-Delevan Food Mart was demolished. Buoyed by the success of a nearby project, Ellicott Development is moving ahead with plans for a mixed-use complex that will sit in the shadow of the University at Buffalo campus.

The Buffalo-based development company is working with Amherst officials on plans to build a four-story hotel along with a 12-unit apartment building on a series of vacant parcels on Rensch Road near Sweet Home Road. An early 1900s house on the property will be preserved and renovated, as well.
