5 Signs Your Office Space May be Slowing Down Your Business’ Growth

Sep 20 2017

An overcrowded office can put the squeeze on your business.

Nurturing a new business means staying a step ahead of problems that could slow growth. One inevitable milestone every thriving enterprise must face is outgrowing its original office space. If you wait too long to line up a better location, you may face a drop in productivity, the loss of customers or problems with brand consistency. Be on the lookout for the following signs, and make your move before it affects your bottom line.

Signs You’ve Outgrown Your Current Office Space

1. You have no room to roam. If you walk into work every morning and automatically squeeze past the copy machine, step over the stacks of overflow files and pull in your stomach to slide into your desk chair, you are space-challenged. Although the thought of moving can be daunting, expansion into a larger space can be one of the best ways to keep your firm on a steady growth trajectory, according to Entrepreneur magazine.

2. The building no longer fits your business’ needs. At first when you opened your office maybe you wanted an open floorplan where no one has an individual office and you wanted to creater a collaborative environment, but as your business has grown, you decide you want more private offices and a more segmented work place. You may need more meeting rooms where you can host perspective clients as leads begin to grow. Your business is always changing so it important to access whether your office space isn’t impeding your operations.

3. Morale hits rock bottom. If you can’t hold regular staff meetings because your board room is filled with inventory, staff members start to feel left out of the loop. No one brings donuts on Friday anymore because there’s not a free inch of counter top for the box and a stack of paper plates. When your office lacks professional cohesion and end-of-week treats, nobody’s happy.

4. The location is not ideal for your employees. If you location is far away from where your employees reside then this creates lengthy commutes for your employees. This can lead to lower employee morale and it may cause your employees to show up late or need to leave early. It is important to have a centralized office location for your employees. You can use a Geographic mid-point calculator online to see the central-point between where all of your employees live.

5. Image is an issue. You may have started your business on a shoestring, but you have built it into a respected brand, and your location should reflect this rise in status. Working out of your garage or basement will no longer cut it when executive clients stop by. Once your startup is turning a steady profit, you need a location that bolsters rather than undermines your carefully crafted brand.
