How to Throw an Apartment Thanksgiving

Nov 15 2017

Spread of Thanksgiving food in an apartment

Contrary to what you might see in the movies, you can absolutely pull off a cozy, festive Thanksgiving celebration no matter how large (or small) your living space. Hosting Thanksgiving dinner in an apartment, small house, or even a tiny home can be just as fun and memorable as spending the holiday in a larger home.

Preparing your apartment for a holiday get-together can seem a little intimidating. However, it doesn’t have to be stressful. These tips can help you make sure that your home is ready for a celebration your friends and family will talk about for years to come.

Skip the centerpieces and keep decorations small

Hosting a memorable Thanksgiving dinner is all about the people, not about the stuff. Although it may be tempting to go all out with large decorations, this may leave you with less space for food and socializing. If table space is a concern, your guests will appreciate as much room as possible for platters, plates, glasses, and bottles.

Don’t stress yourself out over decorations. As long as your home is clean and there’s plenty of seating, who cares? Remember, everyone came to spend time together. Your guests will be too busy laughing and making memories to notice if the cornucopia is missing.

Make room for seating, and get extra seats if needed

Whether your guests like to spend Thanksgiving playing games, watching football, or having long conversations, seating is key to making sure that everyone stays comfortable. If you don’t have enough chairs for everyone, ask one or two of your guests if they can bring a folding table and chairs.

Will you need to rearrange your furniture to make room for seating? Many living rooms are set up in a C-shape so that the TV is the focal point of the space. If your guests are more into talking than watching TV, moving the seating into a circle can create a cozy, intimate feeling.

Declutter the common areas

In addition to making room for seating, clear the clutter away from the common areas. You don’t need to order brand new organizers to make room; shoving the daily clutter into bedroom closets and desk drawers is fine.

If you’re planning to have people over to your apartment for Thanksgiving, it might be worth it to wait until everyone has gone home to put up the tree. Waiting to put up the tree can easily make room for an extra table or couple of chairs.

Clear off flat surfaces for food and drink

Coffee table books, decorative candles, and other homey touches add charm to your home through the year. However, they can be a pain to maneuver around for a roomful of people looking for places to set their glass and their plate. Having countertops, coffee tables, or even the top of a shelf clear for food and drink can help make the most of your living space.
