A prominent addition to the Buffalo skyline and one of the region’s most respected developers were among those honored Monday night at the 10th annual Business First “Brick by Brick” awards.

Garnering top honors for the “Golden Brick” or building of the year was the Kaleida Health Gates Vascular Institute/University at Buffalo Clinical Translational Research Center while Frank McGuire, the McGuire Group chairman, was presented with a lifetime achievement award.

In the individual categories:

• Niagara County Community College’s Culinary Institute in Niagara Falls was named “best education project.” Other finalists were: McKinley High School in Buffalo and SUNY Brockport’s Educational Opportunity Center in Rochester.

• Ellicott Development’s 14 North Street project won the “Best Multi-Residential Project.” The two other finalists were: UB’s Clement Hall and Jamestown Community College’s 117-student residence.

• Rocco Termini’s Hotel@theLafayette was cited as the best “Historic Preservation Project.” Iskalo Development’s former Mennonite Meeting House conversion into an Evans Bank branch was the only other finalist.

• The Kaleida Health/UB GVI was also honored for having the “Best Green Project”. Other finalists were Daemen College’s Haberman Gacioch Center for the Visual & Performing Arts Center and SUNY Geneseo’s Monroe Hall.

• Moog’s new East Aurora headquarters was named the winner in the “Best New Office” category. Bryant & Stratton’s Online Education Center in Orchard Park was the other finalist.

• In the “Best Retail Project” category, the “Brick by Brick” award went to New Era Cap’s Penthouse Suite project. Other finalists were Iskalo’s Mennonite Meeting House project and the Premier Center, both of which are in Amherst.

• The YMCA Independent Health Family Branch in Amherst won the “Best New Construction” award.

• “Best Historic Restoration” went to the Jamestown Gateway Station project.

• ECMC’s Regional Center of Excellence Transplantation & Kidney Care garnered the “Best Medical Complex” award.

• The Brick Walk Cafe on the Chautauqua Institution’s grounds won the “Best Restaurant” category.

A full special section on the Brick by Brick awards will appear in Friday’s Business First. The awards were presented by Time Warner Cable.
